How Retirees Can Create a 'New' Look in their Homes

As baby boomers retire and analyze their homes for improvements, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen suggests options

Waco, Texas – As baby boomers begin to retire and stay in their current home – instead of purchasing a new one in a challenging economy – they will focus on home improvement options, says Doug Dwyer, president and CSO of DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen.

A recent article on MSN.com noted that sales are up at major home improvement chains and interior designers say many of their clients are interested in trying home improvement projects. Coincidentally, retirees will be spending their time analyzing what improvements are lurking under their roofs, Dwyer said.

"With today's economy, many baby boomers will opt to stay in their homes, instead of emptying their pockets for a luxurious condo or house," Dwyer said. "And with home improvements, they will only spend a fraction of the cost of what they'd spend for a brand-new home. As retirees notice what improvement projects have been put to the wayside during their time of employment, we'd like to recommend a few options that will make a huge difference in the 'look' and environment of their homes."

Dwyer suggests the following options:

·         What's Cookin' in the Kitchen? From changing the cabinet knobs to refacing or replacing your entire kitchen, there are a myriad of improvements that can be done. Perhaps you need a larger pantry instead of a big kitchen space. Instead of a long dining room table, maybe you want a two-seater kitchen table for you and your spouse.

·         Add a "Little" Luxury. Forget about improvements; go all out! Those who have just retired deserve to have a gift for all of their hard work. One option might be to incorporate an enhanced vanity in the bathroom, or why not include a soaker bathtub? Having a more spa-like bathroom will allow a venue of therapy and relaxation – just what a retiree needs, Dwyer said.

·         Room Conversion. Now that you have more time on your hands, try converting that empty room in your home into a personal office or hobby room. Designating an area of the home for you to take care of necessary paperwork or do things that interest you, such as painting or scrap-booking, will allow you to better focus on your interests and allow a place to store items related to those interests.

"When looking to make improvements in the home, individuals should consider their home, its functions, and what they actually use. Then work with an expert to realize these goals," Dwyer said.
